Most food companies don't talk about how they process their products.
Because the process is the thing they'd rather you not think about.
High heat. Chemical solvents. Bleaching agents. Refining steps that strip nutrition in the name of shelf life and cost efficiency. The less the consumer knows about what happens between the farm and the packet, the better.
WellyBelly is built on the opposite principle.
The Question We Started With
When we were formulating WellyBelly's products, we kept coming back to one question: not "what should we add?" but "what should we stop removing?"
Most of what makes food nutritionally valuable exists naturally in the ingredient. The fibre in whole grain. The antioxidants in a cold-pressed seed. The bran layer in unpolished rice. These don't need to be engineered in. They need to be left alone.
The modern food industry's default is to remove them for shelf life, for consistency, for cost. And then add back a fraction of what was taken, in synthetic form, and call it fortified.
We didn't want to fortify anything. We wanted to stop stripping it in the first place.
How We Process Each Product
Cold-pressed oils mustard, sunflower, groundnut, and coconut are extracted mechanically at low temperatures. No chemical solvents. No high-heat processing. The natural vitamin E, omega fatty acids, and antioxidants that exist in the seed reach the bottle intact. The oil smells like what it came from which is exactly how you know nothing has been removed.
Our multigrain and no-wheat flours are milled to retain the whole grain composition: the bran, the fibre, the natural protein content of each grain. The result is a flour that digests more slowly, delivers more nutrition per serving, and behaves differently in the body than refined wheat flour. The roti looks the same. What it does inside the body doesn't.
Our white rice is processed to retain more of the natural grain structure, resulting in 50% lower GI than standard polished rice. The same comfort food. A meaningfully different glucose response.
Why It Costs More
Cold pressing is slower than chemical extraction. Whole grain milling is harder to scale than roller milling. Retaining bran in rice reduces yield compared to full polishing.
Every step that makes WellyBelly more nutritious makes it more expensive to produce than the industrial alternative.
We made that trade-off deliberately. Because the alternative stripping the nutrition and selling it cheaper is the problem we're trying to be the solution to.
What This Means for Your Kitchen
Nothing about how you cook needs to change. Same recipes. Same meals. Same flavours.
What changes is what the ingredients are doing inside the body: digesting more slowly, releasing glucose more gradually, delivering the nutrition that industrial processing removes.
